Live, learn and create together

The Institut français, a partner of the Saskatchewan Fransaskois community

“Why even learn French in Canada, and especially out West, where it isn’t profitable professionally, at least not at the moment? It’s a civic act, an act of citizenship. It’s a Canadian act that responds to the vision of a bilingual country with two founding cultures. This vision translates into greater tolerance towards the other culture, not ethnic tolerance, but intercultural tolerance.” [translation]

P. Dorrington, from an interview with Dominique Sarny and Peter DorringtonWorld Wide Web site (in French only)

At the heart of the Saskatchewan Francophone (Fransaskois) community is a dynamic post-secondary institution called the Institut français, created in 2003 and located in Regina. It welcomes students, regardless of their first language, and prepares them to become leaders of the Canadian Francophonie. In addition to offering a range of courses and programs in French, the institution is committed to the cultural, professional and linguistic development of the Fransaskois community. In fact, since community involvement is the cornerstone of its mission, the Institut is always working to build stronger partnerships with the community.

The Institut’s vision is based on the fact that, more and more, the Francophone community in Western Canada can benefit from Anglophones. In addition to French classes, the Institut also offers French-language coaching and strives to create a university environment where students have the opportunity to live in French and practise their second language outside of the classroom. Many sociocultural activities are organized, as well as performances and special events.

Moreover, the Institut conducts research on the state of official language communities. It also has a program for better understanding on Francophone and Métis communities, studying their common experiences and building ties between these two communities. Another important field of research is cultural diversity and inclusion in Fransaskois society.
